Relaxation can be one of the most difficult tasks if you have Fibromyalgia, due to the pain, anxiety, high stress levels, depression, and other symptoms brought on by the disease. I struggled many years trying to find relaxation tools and techniques that would allow me to feel relaxed and at peace, while attaining reduction of many of my Fibromyalgia symptoms. I came across two relaxation methods in CD or MP3 format: guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation, which have helped me to achieve the state of mind and symptom reduction I yearned for. These auditory relaxation materials help teach you methods you can use to decrease Fibromyalgia symptoms.
Progressive muscle relaxation CDs or MP3 downloads take you on a relaxing journey through each muscle group of the body, allowing you to gain control over painful joints and muscles. I have used this form of media, and have found great results, and can now perform progressive muscle relaxation without utilizing a CD or MP3 download. This is because I have learned how to decrease muscle spasms and some pain brought on by Fibromyalgia, by just going through the muscle groups while I am lying down or sitting, with no guidance. Yet this process took me a while to grasp. Progressive muscle relaxation CDs go through each muscle group, usually starting with the feet or head, that teach you how to recognize and control a tense muscle or group of muscles. A CD/MP3 download I have found to be the most relaxing and educational is “Progressive Relaxation & Autogenic Training” by Carolyn McManus (2003). This CD and MP3 download can be purchased in at many different online stores. This specific CD guides you through your major muscle groups and teaches you how to relax each area of your body.
Guided imagery CDs or MP3 downloads take you an a relaxing and healing journey. There are many different themes amongst guided imagery media, to include: the beach, a forest, a park, a walk through a beautiful meadow, and many more. I really enjoy guided imagery, because I can take a mental vacation when ever I chose to do so. This method is generally used to help in reduction of anxiety, pain, and stress, some of the major obstacles for many Fibromyalgia sufferers. A guided imagery CD that I have found to be the most successful and highly rated is "A Guided Meditation for Relaxation, Well Being and Healing" by Glenn Harrold (2002). This CD can also be purchased online, and in some stores as well. Guided imagery has taught me how to heal, relax, and be at peace. I have also begun to master my own guided imagery with out the instruction from a CD, because the CD helped me to learn how to guide myself without instruction. This too can happen to you with a little patience, creativity, and instruction from a guided relaxation CD or MP3 download.
