While the majority of physical and psychological health complications associated with eating disorders affect both men and women, there is an additional condition affecting men known as muscle dysmorphia or "bigorexia."
Muscle dysmorphia, sometimes referred to as bigorexia, has been identified as similar to a reverse form of anorexia. In the same way that the eating disorder of anorexia is at one end of the spectrum of conditions affecting body shape and body image, so is muscle dysmorphia. The condition centres around a distorted body image and impacts the way the sufferer thinks, feels and behaves.
The condition of muscle dysmorphia is much more prevalent among certain groups within the male population. In particular, athletes such as male body-builders have been identified as those deemed to be most affected by muscle dysmorphia. In addition, men involved with boxing and wrestling may also be at a greater risk.
