When you or a friend is suffering from achy muscles, a pillow that is filled with rice and lavender will ease your suffering. The rice allows the pillow to drape over the affected area and the scent of lavender soothes a headache, muscle tenderness, anxiety, or the tenderness associated with arthritis. It also warms cold beds on a winter night, or cold toes anytime.
This pillow is easy to make and is a wonderful gift.
To use the finished pillow, heat it in the microwave for one to two minutes. Before removing the pillow from the microwave do a touch test to make sure that it is not too hot. Drape the pillow over the area that needs to be heated or that needs relief.
Materials and Supplies:
- Sewing Machine
- Hand sewing needle
- 1/4 yard muslin or heavy cotton fabric
- 1/4 yard decorative fabric that is smooth to the touch
- Thread to go with the chosen fabric
- Stiff piece of paper
- 4 cups white rice
- 1 cup dried lavender flowers
- Satin ribbon or fabric trim
Instructions:
- Starting with the muslin fabric, cut the fabric into a strip 9 inches wide by 17 inches long.
- Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides of the fabric together.
- Using 1/2 inch wide seam allowances, sew seams along the two long sides of the folded fabric. Start at the fold and work towards the open 9 inch end.
- At the end, sew in towards the middle from each side for 3 inches. Backstitch to secure stitches.
- Turn the bag right side out and poke the corners so they are angles.
- Form a funnel by rolling a stiff piece of paper into a cone.
- Insert the cone into the three inch opening in the fabric and pour the rice through the funnel into the muslin bag.
- Add the lavender in the same manner.
- Shake the rice and the lavender to the bottom of the bag and fold the ends in.
- Sew along the top of the opening to close the bag securely.
- Using the decorative fabric, follow the steps 1 through 3.
- At the end of the decorative fabric, fold in towards the middle from each side for 1 inch. Backstitch to secure.
- Turn the decorative fabric bag right side out and poke the corners to form an angle.
- Slip the muslin bag, filled with the rice and lavender, into the decorative fabric bag.
- Slip stitch the end of the decorative fabric bag.
- Add ribbon or trim to the pillow as desired, remembering that the pillow will most likely be against the skin, so the trim should be soft to the touch.
- Use the stiff paper, that formed the funnel, to write the directions on the use of the pillow if you are giving the rice and lavender pillow as a gift. Be sure to write a warning that the pillow will be hot when taken from the microwave and the user should be aware.
