Seniors over the age of 50 are at risk for having leg cramps, sometimes called a charley horse, which may be particularly bothersome at night when attempting to sleep. According to the American Association of Retired Person’s (AARP) web article entitled “Leg Pain,” some of the most common causes of leg cramps include:

  • dehydration or electrolyte imbalances
  • muscle fatigue, injuries, inflammation, or infections
  • circulation problems or nerve damage
  • medications

Dehydration and Altered Electrolyte Levels May Cause Leg Cramps

Dehydration is a common problem in long-term care facilities and in older adults, according to the 2010 North Carolina Nurse Aide curriculum approved for 2010. A lack of adequate water in the body may be due to a variety of reasons, such as inadequate intake, environmental conditions, or medications.

Delicate mineral or chemical balance within the blood may be affected by dehydration or other factors, such as osteopenia or osteoporosis. Some of the more common chemicals, or electrolytes, that may cause leg cramps if their balance is disrupted include:
