Sometimes humans develop an odd lump under the skin that does not go away. This one lump can turn into multiple lumps that continue to grow. These small lumps are known as lipomas or fatty tumors. Basically, it is a small non-cancerous tumor made up of fatty tissue.
Lipomas can show up in anyone, but are most common in adults. There are no specific reasons why these develop. In cases of individual cysts, it has been noted that sometimes it will occur after a soft tissue injury. Even animals can have dog lipomas and may appear in cats. Symptoms of a lipoma include a lump under the skin that may get as big as one to ten centimeters, moves around under the skin when pressed and feels soft and rubbery. While most lipomas remain small, others may grow several inches in diameter and be visible under a person's clothing. Normally, doctors take a "watch and wait" attitude towards treating lipomas, but may remove the lumps if they are pressing on a person's nerve or muscle and causing pain. While there is not a cure yet for this condition, there are several ways to treat lipomas.
