The knee is such an important part of the human body, not only for movement, but also for balance and posture. An injury to it is therefore fairly detrimental to the ability of a person to walk or run properly.

The Unhappy Triad Knee Injury

One such injury that can be devastating is referred to as the “Unhappy Triad”. This is when three structures in the knee, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL) and medial meniscus (cartilage) are all injured or damaged in the same incidence.

This leads to intense swelling around the knee, leaving it a bent position. The initial damage at first can seem fairly minor with soft tissue damage and torn cartilage, but the real damage can only be identified two or three weeks after the initial injury. The MCL will heal by themselves, but the cartilage and the ACL need reconstruction if normal function is to be restored.
